AS I CLOSE THE DOOR

Dear Lord, as I close the door on the old year, I ponder the things I've done... the things I've said and the joys I've had I wonder, have I lost or won?

I've thought of new friends I have made, and the old ones, staunch and true... the paths of the old year made easier, Lord, because I have walked them with You

I think of all the many times, when my burdens were so heavy to bear, and how my faith slipped away from me but somehow You were always there

Now, as I open the door to this New Year, and carefully peep inside, I wonder what it holds for me... but I'll throw the door open wide.

Whatever it brings to me and mine, I'll meet it with a heart so true... I know that, Lord, whatever it may be, You'll be there to carry me through!

Rest in Peace: Prince Rogers Nelson

Rest in Peace: It is with a heavy heart that I write this. On April 21, 2016, one of my all-time favorite artists, Prince (Prince Rogers Nelson) died. He was more than a musical genius: He was a shrewd business man, a musical legend, a dynamic live act, a producer, an innovator, a pioneer, a visionary, an icon, and ahead of his time. I am so grateful for the wealth of music he left us. There will never be another like Prince. We lost a great one. This one hit me exceptionally hard. I'm still processing it. One person can change the world.

I pray for his family, dear friends and all his fans, like me, who love him. May he rest in peace always. Goodnight, dear Prince!

Living my dream: In the studio...in the zone!

Dear Friends:

You asked for it: I'm finally working on new music to release this fall.

Today, I'm so happy to be recording my third song, Never Ever Give Up (written by Benita Charles and Jean Wiltz) from my forthcoming EP, Lessons in the Metronome Studio in Middle Village, NY!

It sounds so awesome!! I can't wait for everyone to hear it. I'm really proud of it. My hopes with this song is to encourage people to never, ever give up on their dreams!

I'm working with a really great producer who I love. Themi has a great ear, he has great ideas and suggestions and he is totally honest with me about what he hears. He also gives me so much room to express my unique creativity. Working with him is a pleasure!

This song marks the halfway point in my musical journey with lessons. I'm so excited, I could scream!! It's truly a labor of love. It's a totally different record from Moments In Love but in a good way.

I'd like to thank everyone for their continued interest and support of my music. It keeps me encouraged and moving forward. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Happy Spring!

Happy Spring! It's finally here!! Spring is a wonderful time for new beginnings and a fresh start. I'm looking forward to warmer days, longer nights and fresh flowers. Unfortunately, Old Man Winter hasn't gotten the memo and he's not going out without a fight. Snow - on the first day of spring - unbelievable! I'm looking forward to warmer weather!!

Speaking of the spring time, I've decided to forgo my normal spring concert this year. Many of you have been asking me periodically for new music and I appreciate your interest. Presently, I'm working on new music to be released this year that warrants my full attention. It's coming soon! I will keep you posted. :)

A special thanks to all who came out and supported Preachermann and The Revival at Drom in the east village on February 21st! It was a great show and a new venue for us. We played in front of an audience where the majority didn't know us and they were very responsive to us! This was the ultimate test of the power of our music. Look for more exciting shows coming up in the coming months.

For those of you who are new to Benita Charles Music: welcome and thank you for your support! I have performances with my own projects, The Benita Charles Trio and The Benita Charles & Friends Band. Also, I perform with the atomic soul band, Preacherman and the Revival. This is not a gospel show but it is heartfelt, soulful music good for the soul. I hope you will have an opportunity to see one of my shows. Thanks for signing my mailing list!

That's all for now. I will keep you posted of the new music! I can't wait to share it with you,.

Take care and enjoy the beautiful spring time!

Happy Martin Luther King Day!

MLK Day observed: On this day January 20th, we honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He was a true leader with a vision who showed us that one person can make a difference and change the world!

"I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality...I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word." -- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Merry Christmas from Benita Charles Music!

Happy Holidays to you and your family! Christmas time is my favorite time of the year. May the joys of Christmas fill your heart with love. Wishing you a wonderful holiday today!

Today, many special children are enjoying their holiday thanks to our efforts through the Toys for Tots organization. Thank you so much to all who attended and donated toys to my fifth annual toy drive at Bar Thalia at Symphony Space on Friday, December 13th. The marines were present at the show and they picked up a large box from the show. It was a huge success thanks to you! It was well worth the effort knowing the children will enjoy the magic of Christmas today.

I am so grateful for your support of my musical endeavors through the years. I really appreciate your interests, words of encouragement, support (by purchasing my music and attending my shows) and your well wishes. To all my new friends who recently signed my mailing list, it was nice to meet you and I look forward to seeing you at my shows in the future.

May you have a day filled with love, joy and happiness to last you throughout the year!

"I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year." -- Charles Dickens

Prayers for Boston

I was so saddened to hear of the tragedy of the bombings at the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013. My heart goes out to to the people of Boston and all those who have family and friends there. Please know there are people in this world who care and are praying for you!

I thought about we as musicians and how important it is for us to share our love through our music to heal the world. Music is healing and it unites all people of all races and backgrounds. We have a special gift and it's so important that we do this. Keep bringng soul to the world. Keep rocking. Keep making music!

I am so grateful for life. As we go through our daily lives we tend to take so many things for granted. I'm grateful to God for life, to all my family, friends, fans, coworkers, musician friends, Toastmasters friends, actors, people I've met through the various stages of my life and various activities...thank you for being in my life!

Our thoughts and prayers continue for the people of Boston and all those affected by the tragedy.

Benita Charles perform soulful set at Kenny's Castaways - 8/17/12

Dear Friends:

Here's a special performance of my song, "We Can Make A Difference" (unplugged) that my guitarist, Peter Archer and I performed for a private event for Toastmasters District 46 on July 28th at the Hard Rock Cafe in NYC. (view: http://youtu.be/347k5NmmGDw ) This year's district theme for the 2012-2013 term is "Making A Difference" (inspired by my performance in the spring conference in May). I'm honored that I've been asked to sing the song again for the fall conference in November.

Moody's Club shines at Toastmasters Area 43 Competition - 3/28/12

As many of you know, I recently competed in the Toastmasters Area 43 Speech Competition Wednesday night (March 28th) in New York City.

Wendy Shao and I won second prize at the competition. I won second place for the international speech contest and Wendy won second place for the table topic (impromptu speech) contest. Wendy is our club president. It was a great night for the Moody's Club! It only goes up from here. :)

I joined Moody's Toastmasters Club in December 2011 to improve my public speaking ability and presentation skills. It has been a great journey as I've definitely grown professionally and personally as an artist. I'm very excited to continue this journey to see where it will take me.

A special thank you to everyone for your compliments and support!

Much Love,

Remembering Whitney Houston

I am so shocked and saddened to hear of the sudden death of Whitney Houston. She is definitely one of my favorite singers and had one of the greatest voices of all time. She inspired me to be a singer. Her voice will go down in history as one of the greatest.

I send my heartfelt prayers to her family.

It's such a tragic loss that words can't express how I feel. I really thought she would pull through. I really didn't think her life would end this way.

We have so many beautiful memories to remember her by. I will focus on those memories and recordings of her gift.

No more suffering, Whitney. You can rest in peace now.

A very special thank you to all who attended "Moments In Love" on Saturday, February 11th at Bar Thalia - Symphony Space. It was a beautiful night of love & music!!

It was also bittersweet in learning of the death of Whitney Houston before the show. I dedicated "The Greatest Love of All" in her honor. I really felt her spirit in the room. I'm still in shock that she's no longer with us. She has been such an inspiration to me and so many other singers in the world. I'm very sad right now. I send my heartfelt prayers to her family. I will always love you, Whitney. You can now rest in peace.

"MOMENTS IN LOVE" starring Benita Charles

Dear Friends:

I hope the New Year - 2012 is treating you well. Things are great with me. I always enjoy this time of the year of new beginnings.

I'm very excited to announce I am reviving my one-woman show, "Moments In Love" on Saturday, February 11th at Bar Thalia - Symphony Space at 9:00 pm - just in time for Valentine's Day. If you are looking for something to do with your sweetheart or you want to find love, please join me for an evening of "love" on the upper west side.

This show is where it all started for me in my performance career in New York. Several years ago, I produced and starred in my first cabaret show in the West Village called "Moments In Love." I sang various popular love songs from different genres to explore the meaning of love. From that show, I started writing original music and my debut CD, Moments In Love: Volume 1 was created!

For those of you who've followed my career from the very beginning, thank you so much for taking this journey with me. It's all come to this special moment! This show is dear to my heart and I look forward to sharing it with you again. For those of you who are new to my shows, I hope you will enjoy "love" from my perspective!

Please join me for an evening of love, great music and fun. It's all about love and love is what you will find!

Much Love,

I know that, Lord, whatever it may be, You'll be there to carry me through

--Merrei Thompson

Moody's Holiday Choir's community outreach a huge success at Cobble Hill!

What a great time the Moody's Holiday Choir had at the Cobble Hill Health Center in Brooklyn on Saturday, December 18, 2010!

The residents really enjoyed themselves and they were a great audience! They sang along with the songs and they were thoroughly entertained during the solo pieces.

It was such an exhilarating feeling to give back to the community and bring so much joy to the residents. It was so wonderful to see their faces light up when we started to sing. All of us felt such a feeling of fulfillment when the show was over!

I'd like to especially thank Mark Lee (our director), Connie Madrid, Joe Melillo and Luis Valentin for taking the time out of their busy schedules to take part in the Moody's Holiday Choir Community Service at Cobble Hill Health Center. I'd also like to thank Fran Laserson and Jennifer Stula of the Moody's Foundation and Josephine Puchin of Moody's Corporation for making it possible for the choir to participate in the community outreach program at Cobble Hill Health Center.

It was a huge success and the director of the center along with the residents would like for us to come back! :)

That's what the holidays are all about - giving and sharing love & music to heal the world!!

I wish you and yours a happy holiday season!

xoxo,

A Message from Benita Charles

Dear Friends:

I'm sending this note to you to let you know how I appreciate all of your kind support and encouragement for me during this horrible time in New York. By the grace of God, I'm doing fine. Although I work in the immediate area of the WTC, I report to work at 10:00 a.m. so I missed the horrible days events of Tuesday, September 11, 2001 (911).

At this time, I'd like to take the opportunity to thank you for your support of my creative endeavors throughout the year(s).

Take care and I wish you and your families well. Let us all pray for those families who have lost loved ones in this terrible tragedy.

New York is an incredible city. As we pick up the pieces and finally begin to heal, we are pulling together and helping each other through this horrible time. We are strong and will recover from this and be better than ever. There's a renewed sense of unity that has made us even stronger.

For those of you outside of New York, thank you for your prayers and please continue to pray for us as we rebuild our city.

Much Love,

Benita
